10> MOTORHEAD
Originally named Bastards was Later changed to Motorhead. Motorhead are a British metal band formed in the year of 1975 by bassist, singer and songwriter Lemmy Kilmister who is the only sole member in the band left from the first. Motorhead had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles. Also albums like Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and No Sleep 'til Hammersmith has placed Motorhead's reputation as one of Britain's greatest metal band ever.
9> ANTHRAX
Anthrax is an American heavy metal band from New York City, formed in 1981. The band was one of the most popular of the 1980s thrash metal scene. When thrash metal began to gain a major following in the mid-to-late 1980s, Anthrax were dubbed one of the "big four" of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer.
8> PANTERA
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed by the Abbott brothers, Vinnie (drums) and Darrell (guitar) in 1981. This band eventually went on to make their name in heavy metal history. In the year 1990 the album Cowboys From Hell, was a huge success the post-thrash band put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene.
7> AC/DC
AC/DC are an Australian rock band, formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. To date they are one of the highest grossing bands of all time. AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. "Back In Black," has achieved RIAA "Double Diamond" status, for sales in excess of 21 million copies in the United States, and is the U.S.'s fifth largest-selling album ever.
6> SLAYER
Slayer was formed in 1981, when guitarist Kerry King met Jeff Hanneman while auditioning for a band. Slayer were one of the most distinctive, influential, and extreme thrash
metal bands of the 1980s. Their graphic lyrics deal with everything from
death and dismemberment to war and the horrors of hell. Over the years, Slayer put out some high-quality albums, including one
undisputed classic (Reign in Blood), and saw the numbers of critics
and detractors shrinking as their impact on the growing death metal
movement was gradually and respectfully acknowledged.
5> JUDAS PRIEST
Judas Priest formed in 1969, and were huge in the seventies and
eighties. In fact, they were probably the most popular heavy metal band
of their time. MTV named Judas Priest the second best metal band of all time. Judas Priest or more famously known as the 'METAL GODS' have sold over thirty five million albums, and shown future metal bands how to become successful.
4> IRON MAIDEN
Iron Maiden spearheaded the British heavy metal wave in the 80's. Since their explosion on the scene in the early eighties IRON MAIDEN
have been hailed as one of the UK's greatest live acts of all time with
their fiery brand of music, spectacle and live performance all of which
has excited their fans around the planet for over three decades. To date they have almost 75 million records and their name, imagery and artwork has made them the recognised symbols and Icons for the Metal music genre and its followers.
3> MEGADETH
Dave Mustaine is a guitar god and one of the founding members of
Metallica, as well as the founder of Megadeth, which is a wildly
successful band in its own right. Megadeth emerged in 1985 at the forefront of the thrash/speed metal scene with their seminal debut
"Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good", and continued on a
blistering path of albums and tours throughout the decade. Since 1983, Megadeth has sold over twenty million albums, making them
one of the most successful heavy metal acts out there. On top of that,
they are just one of the bands who helped bring thrash metal to the
masses.
2> BLACK SABBATH
Black Sabbath has been so influential in the development of heavy metal
rock music as to be a defining force in the style. . If their
predecessors clearly came out of an electrified blues tradition, Black
Sabbath took that tradition in a new direction, and in so doing helped
give birth to a musical style that continued to attract millions of fans
decades later. They are a groundbreaking band that won't go away, which is great if you're a fan of heavy metal music like I am.
1> METALLICA
Formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James
Hetfield, Metallica have become one of the most influential and
commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 100 million
albums worldwide and playing to millions of fans the world over. They raised the bar for every other metal band out there, and brought new life to the metal genre. Besides their success being a factor, Metallica is my favorite metal band of all time.
